Inlays and Onlays

Joyful white woman showing off her beautiful teeth with a smile.Restorative inlays and onlays are a form of indirect restoration made outside of the mouth. Like crowns, they are precise fitting castings and are cemented in place in the tooth. This is considered an alternative to direct restorations, made out of composite, amalgam, or glass ionomer. Our practitioners at East Portland Dentistry are always available and ready to help you achieve optimal oral health.

Material Used to Make Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used in molars and premolars when the tooth has experienced too much damage to support a basic filling but not so much damage that a crown is necessary. An inlay will incorporate the pits and fissures of the tooth; mainly we focus on encompassing the chewing surface between the cusps.

Inlays and onlays can be made of gold, composite, or ceramic material. These materials all perform the same function. The advantages of having your inlays and onlays in our facility are that ours are conservative, cost-effective, malleable, stain-resistant, and of excellent quality and precision.

Procedure for Inlay and Onlay Placement

The inlay/onlay procedure includes various steps.

After making sure the area is numb, the tooth is prepared for the new onlay. All the old filling and decay is thoroughly removed resulting in a clean and solid tooth structure to support the onlay.

Step two involves an impression of the tooth. A mold will allow the lab to fabricate a precise fitting inlay or onlay. This mold helps you and your dentist decide which material to use for the inlay/only. We prefer using ceramic to allow our patients to pick the shade of the restoration during the visit.

Step 3 involves temporary filling placement. While the inlay or onlay is being prepared, a temporary filling is placed to seal the prepared space. This helps prevent further decay and protects your tooth from thermal stimulation - sensitivity caused by cold or hot liquids.

The last step involves the placement of the inlay or onlay. After the restoration is made, you will set up one more appointment with our dentist to have the inlay or onlay placed. The temporary filling is gently removed, and the inlay/onlay is fitted and cemented into place. The final inlay or onlay can be a beautiful replacement that feels like your natural tooth for many years to come. You will need to maintain this restoration with routine exams and cleanings at our office.
