Dental Filling

3D rendering of three teeth each with a different dental filling material: composite, amalgam, and gold. The most common way to treat a cavity is to remove the decay and fill the tooth. We can fill a cavity in your teeth with gold, silver amalgam, composite resins, or glass ionomer materials. At East Portland Dentistry, we repair cracked teeth or ones that have worn down. Our dentist can also replace any missing portions of a tooth to prevent decay and eventual pain or further fracture. We strongly recommend a thorough cleaning before the filling treatment in order to accurately detect all areas of decay.

Conditions, signs, or symptoms related to tooth decay

If your teeth are sensitive to sweets, you should avoid them since anything that contains sugar can cause sharp, continuing pain from a specific spot in the tooth which may be harboring decay. This pain may diminish over time; however, that does not mean the problem has gone away. To aid in pain relief, you can try rinsing your tooth well with warm water. This pain may indicate dental caries, and you need to seek help from our professionals immediately to reduce the chances of more severe tooth damage, which may also lead to required root canal therapy.

When your teeth are sensitive to heat, this can be a sign of more serious inflammation of the dental pulp. Our practitioners may have many solutions for this which may include performing endodontic treatment, or more commonly, a root canal.

Teeth sensitive to pressure may fall into a category of inflammation or infection resulting from decay.

If your teeth teeth have dark spots, or black areas of holes, you should have an immediate exam with a dentist to prevent further damage and tooth loss.

The procedure

An x-ray is used to determine more precise information regarding the location and severity of the tooth decay, allowing the dentist to start the filling process. Our dental practitioner will administer a local anesthetic so that the area affected becomes numb. This ensures that our patients are comfortable during the entire procedure. The area of decay is removed leaving a clean solid remaining portion of the tooth to be filled. The filling material is then applied to the area to restore the tooth to its original form and function. Placing a composite filling requires isolation of the affected tooth to prevent any moisture interference that could affect the bond of the composite restoration.

Our professionals ensure the composite material is of the desired type and best quality. The composite material is also hardened with a special bonding light. The tooth is then polished.

A follow-up with our office at your next recall exam is also a preferable measure after your filling has been placed. We can be contacted at (971) 484-1652 to schedule an appointment. At East Portland Dentistry, we guarantee our patients nothing short of excellence.
