Dentistry for Kids

Adorable and young Black girl sitting in a dental chair and smiling at her older white dentist and white dental assistantEnsuring our children's oral health is vital. Our esteemed services cover dentistry for kids. We encourage children, just like adults, to come in and visit us every six months. East Portland Dentistry loves to have all ages of children in our practice. Our dental staff are always available and ready to take care of your dental needs.

Baby Teeth

Good dental care begins before a baby's first tooth appears. A baby has 20 unerupted primary teeth at birth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw. Before those baby teeth erupt, a clean damp washcloth can be used on the gums to remove debris. For kids who have started getting their teeth in, an infant toothbrush is advised. Brushing should be done using water and a bit of non-fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice. Babies and children in the Portland area may need to have a fluoride supplement, due to lack of fluoridation in the city water.

Caring for Your Child's Teeth

When two of your baby's teeth develop, flossing can begin. At the age of two, your kids should only use a pea-sized amount of non-fluoride toothpaste. Brushing and flossing techniques are also taught at our dentistry location.

Parents are advised not to put their babies to sleep with a bottle since it can pool around teeth and cause extensive harm. When kids are almost six months old, the transition from a bottle to a sippy cup during the daytime is recommended by our practitioners. Parents should limit beverages such as milk and juice to only mealtimes, whereas a sippy cup with water can be used all day.

Preventing Cavities

Kids are affected mainly by cavities due to the weakening of the tooth enamel. Our dentist encourages starting good oral habits early on. Habits like brushing twice a day, getting enough fluoride to toughen the enamel, and limiting sugary foods, can all help improve kids' oral habits and conditions to avoid dental caries.

Our dentists can also prevent the decay of the permanent teeth by applying a thin wash of resin called a sealant where most chewing happens. In situations of severe cavities, our dentist may apply a dental filling. In case of tooth fractures, extensive decay, or malformation of baby teeth, we opt for stainless steel or ceramic crowns, which maintain the teeth by preventing decay from spreading.

Other Ways to Protect Your Child's Teeth

Regular checkups and good dental hygiene are advised to prevent extensive dental work. Kids are also advised to use mouthguards during sports to prevent serious dental injuries. Orthodontic treatments are also offered for kids as young as seven years old. Our distinguished orthodontists know that manipulating teeth at a young age can be easy and more efficient in the long run. Your child can have their teeth positioned with relatively minor orthodontic devices preventing effective treatment later. We have the latest and corrective appliances and plastic-based materials.
