Periodontal Care![]() Causes of Gum DiseaseThere are many causes for periodontal disease and often a patient has multiple risk factors. We've listed some of the following: Inadequate Dental Care and Poor Home Care Accumulation of plaque and tartar causes inflammation of the gingiva and bone surrounding the teeth. If not thoroughly cleaned off every day, loss of the periodontal bone occurs over time. Tobacco Use Smoking, vaping, chewing, and dipping all contribute to poor oral health, periodontal disease being one sequelae. Genetics A family history of periodontitis is a strong predictor of disease. Routine dental exams can help you know if you are at risk. Medications Over half of the routinely prescribed medication can have an effect on your oral health. Many cause a dry mouth decreasing the buffering capacity of saliva, and making plaque stickier and more difficult to remove. Hormonal Changes Pregnancy or other changes in hormone levels can contribute to inflammation. Although many of these changes may be transitory, it is best to come in regularly for professional cleanings to minimize the risk of permanent bone loss. Symptoms of Gum DiseaseSymptoms of gum disease can include bleeding gums after brushing, red swollen gums, persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth, receding gums, formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums, loose teeth, and changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down. Treatment of Gum DiseaseIf it is determined that you have gingivitis or periodontal disease, the professionals at East Portland Dentistry will help you through the process of restoring your dental health. This may be as simple as a one-visit prophylaxis, or as intricate as multiple visits of scaling and root planing. The tartar and plaque will be removed and if required, a deeper cleaning with numbing may be necessary. Typically, follow-up visits and a more frequent dental cleaning schedule is recommended. On occasion, consultation or referral to a periodontist is recommended where they can surgically correct bone defects, improve periodontal pocket depth, or replace gingiva with a soft tissue graft.
